Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

What is ICSI?

ICSI is a specialised procedure in which a single healthy sperm is chosen and precisely inserted into a mature egg using microscopic guidance. This procedure is particularly beneficial in cases where sperm may need additional support to achieve fertilisation.

The science

Science You Can Trust

The main distinction between IVF and ICSI lies in how fertilisation occurs. In IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together in a dish, allowing fertilisation to happen naturally. When sperm quality or number is limited, ICSI is used instead—where an Embryologist directly injects a single sperm into the egg.

Our team evaluates your medical background and the condition of the sperm sample on the day of egg retrieval to recommend the most suitable option—IVF or ICSI—giving you the best possible chance of pregnancy.

Personalised Fertility Care

At WFC, every treatment plan is tailored to your needs. Your Fertility Specialist works hand in hand with our Nurses and Embryologists, ensuring expert care at every stage. Once your eggs and sperm are in the laboratory, our skilled Embryologists assess and advise whether ICSI is the best approach for you.

The ICSI Process

Step 1

Cycle Monitoring & Ovarian Stimulation

Your cycle is tracked through blood tests and ultrasound scans, ensuring medications are working effectively and your treatment plan stays on course.

Step 2

Egg Collection

Known as Oocyte Pick Up (OPU), this is a routine procedure performed under light anaesthesia at our Hospital to retrieve mature eggs from the ovaries.

Step 3

Sperm Collection

On the same day, a sperm sample is provided by the male partner, typically through masturbation. The sample is then prepared in our laboratory to select the healthiest sperm for use.

Step 4

Fertilisation

In an ICSI cycle, one carefully chosen sperm is directly injected into each mature egg, increasing the likelihood of embryo development.

Step 5

Embryo Development

The resulting embryos are closely monitored for growth, quality, and progression. Our specialists carefully select the most suitable embryo for transfer to maximise success.

Step 6

Embryo Transfer & Follow-Up

The healthiest embryo is placed in the uterus, and guidance is provided on how to check for early pregnancy signs. If conditions are not ideal for transfer, embryos can be frozen and safely stored for a future Frozen Embryo Transfer cycle.
